Riga Expo Centre consists of two buildings which are designed by different styles in different times. These buildings could not represent the city of Riga in an architectural way. In our project, the idea of behind the design of extension building, is to describe with a new architectural face to provide an identity, and create an iconic building in a city, unlike the existing building which currently does not have any harmony and integrity. Local design components of Latvia and the silhouette of historical city Riga are remarkable tools to enrich background of the design. The design building is harmonized with these local components and 21st century contemporary architecture. In terms of competition content, the design of project is approached by three different areas for indoor activities, outdoor activities and circulation axis. The design building focuses on the necessity of three different separated functions.
Outdoor activity area portrays an interface for guests who can use there before entering the building. They can pass the circulation axis via outdoor activity area, moreover they can reach all different functions from circulation axis without any interruptions. Functions are positioned in an opaque and complementary roof. The different space heights are also taken in consideration due to co-operation function needs, and this roof has an uninterrupted, fluid design. Auditoriums which have expandable open plans are positioned in closely to entrance lobby. Temporarily exhibition areas are integrated into small meeting rooms and completed with a book shop area. The gates of current Exhibition Hall 2 are functioned as new passages which are connected with extension area and existing exhibition hall.
